Susan Chin, FAIA was elected 2013-14 AIA vice president and is currently Executive Director of the Design Trust for Public Space, a non-profit think tank shaping public space since 1995. Previously the Assistant Commissioner for Capital Projects for the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, Ms. Chin supervised the $1B capital program and Percent for Art which included over 200 city cultural institutions.

A current AIA National Board member who serves as New York’s Regional Director, Chin is on both the AIA Membership Committee and Strategic Direction Group/Communications Committee. She chaired the AIA Gold Medal Advisory committee in 2011, served on the Executive Vice President CEO Search Committee in 2010, and was the president of the AIA New York chapter in 2005.

“The AIA must strengthen its role in preparing architects, especially emerging professionals, to serve as leaders in a wider range of roles,” Chin said. “I am deeply committed to this important goal by encouraging leadership and increasing our shared knowledge through improved communication. When AIA members work collaboratively, we solve complex problems, transform public policies, and inspire new approaches to improving the public realm and meeting the aspirations of our citizens.”

Chin was awarded a Loeb fellowship at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design in 2000. She earned a master’s degree in historic preservation from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a bachelor’s of science degree in architecture from Ohio State University.
