Please join the Women in Architecture Committee for an informal conversation with Billie Tsien, AIA, co-founder of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects I Partners in New York City. Tsien will discuss her practice as a woman, and as a partner in work and life.
Billie Tsien, FAIA, co-founder of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects | Planners, was born in 1949 in Ithaca, New York. Tsien received her undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from Yale in 1971, and worked as a painter and teacher before completing her M. Arch. from UCLA in 1977. She has worked with Williams since then, and they have been in partnership since 1986. Their studio focuses on work for institutions – museums, schools and non-profits; organizations that value issues of aspiration and meaning, timelessness and beauty. Along with recurrent recognition by the American Institute of Architects, the firm has garnered local, national, and international acclaim and press. Most recently, Tsien was awarded an honorary international fellowship to the Royal Institute of British Architects, and the National Medal of Arts from President Barack Obama. Parallel to her practice, Tsien maintains an active teaching career and lectures worldwide. She has recently taught with Williams at Yale University, Cornell University, the University of Florida, and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Tsien is currently the President of the Architectural League of New York and a board member of the Public Art Fund. In 2007, Tsien was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
